From Sheep to Plant—and Back Again
The idea behind the Groeiboost (Grow-boost) is both simple and beautiful: to make a complete, regenerative cycle visible, from grass to soil and back again.
Sheep eat grass and grow wool. Wool is shorn and becomes a small plant pot. The plant grows inside the wool pot as the wool breaks down, nourishes the soil, and helps the plant grow even stronger.
With the Groeiboost, we make this cycle something you can literally feel: from grazing to growing.
Why Wool Is So Good for Plants
Wool may be best known as a material for sweaters and blankets, but it is also a surprisingly good ally for plants. As wool decomposes, it releases nutrients that enrich the soil and stimulate plant growth. By felting wool into a small growing pot, you pass this benefit on to your plant: your plant, cutting, or seedling literally grows within its own source of nutrition.
Wool offers other advantages, too: it retains water, repels certain insects, provides insulation against heat and cold, and is biodegradable.
For this product, we deliberately use unwashed wool—often surplus wool that would otherwise go to waste and hold little value. Currently, 1.5 million kilograms of this type of wool are incinerated annually in the Netherlands. By giving this wool a new purpose, we demonstrate the immense potential still held within this so-called grey wool.
A collaboration with Minne Zeijdner of Minneworks. This product was commisioned by HNI Rotterdam for the New Store. Compopac provided the netting.
